One time I was sitting in a class in high school when a group of kids near me started making racist jokes. This isn't an unusual situation in high school. I didn't say anything because I wasn't apart of the conversation, and I didn't want to get in their business and tell them what to do. After reading Cole's essay, I know I should have said something to them then, or privately after class. If more people would actually speak up, these kind of situations wouldn't have to be a common thing.
